Caerynok

Caerynok is a rather diverse city, and the capital of Vorlkim. It is the only known outlet from the underground Vorlid dwarven kingdoms, settled in the Tor’Masa Pass, the main connection between the Enthian human kingdoms of the east and the Elven forest of Ver-dillain. As such, it’s become a major trade hub, with Dwarves, Elves, and Humans coming for exotic goods from the other countries. You will occassionally find other races here, as the city itself is considered ‘neutral territory’ – You are granted sanctuary within the city so long as you have not committed any crimes within Vorlkim itself. As such, a large number of outlaws have expatriated to Caerynok, where they have striven to make a new name for themselves, and these criminals tend to enforce the laws of the city more than even the gaurds, for fear of losing their safe haven.

Caerynok is only 8 square miles, however it extends deep into the ground and high into the mountains on either side, making the most use of the space available. The architecture is a blend of Dwarven, Elven, Human, Old and New. More often than not buildings are renovated, not demolished and rebuilt, so the architecture of the building gives no clue as to it’s inhabitants, save that there is a high concentration of humans on the eastern side of the city, a high concentration of elves to the west, and a high concentration of dwarves below.

The government of Vorlkim, and by extension Caerynok, is an absolute monarchy, with the nobility being drawn from the military. You cannot be a noble without at least serving 4 years in some type of service, though the monarch, currently an unmarried young King, Andros the XXIII, can make exceptions for those who have served the country diligently in some other fashion. The King is advised by his mother, the Dowager Queen Minzar. According to tradition, the bride of the next king is taken from one of the three dominant races, leading to an interesting mix of bloodlines. Andros the XXII married a dwarf, and Andros the XXI married a human, meaning that Andros the XXIII is expected to marry an elf, though there have been no mentioned prospects yet. Betting on various Elven noblewomen is a common pastime in Caerynok.
